The organization calls on the Russian authorities to eliminate the contradictions. The process of forgetting in psychology: causes, theories, mechanisms. In which row is the same letter missing in all three words?

Perhaps for the first time, scientists have managed to detect a signal from a satellite of a planet outside the solar system. However, it will apparently never be possible to find out whether this is true or not.

NASA/JPL-Caltech

In the last decade, especially since the start of operation of the Kepler spacecraft in 2009, the number of planets discovered outside the solar system - the so-called exoplanets - has been rapidly increasing. Currently, the discovery of 1056 exoplanets has been confirmed, and the number of candidates is several times higher.

However, until now it has not been possible to prove that exoplanets have satellites. This is primarily due to the complexity of the search for extrasolar planets. Thus, the method that Kepler uses - transit - one of the scientists working on this problem compared to trying to see a midge against the background of a bright car headlight from a distance of several meters.

Recently, however, a happy accident allowed scientists to seriously talk about observing an exoplanet with a moon orbiting it. In June 2011, a New Zealand telescope detected an unexpected increase in the brightness of one of the stars. This rare phenomenon is usually attributed to the effect of gravitational microlensing. If a massive body passes in front of a luminous object, it slightly bends the light rays, briefly increasing the apparent brightness of the source. It was in this way, for example, that an exoplanet was previously discovered for the first time in a brown dwarf system.

JPL/NASA

It would be most natural to assume that this time too, scientists managed to discover a small and not very bright star with a planet. However, analysis of the recorded signal showed that an alternative interpretation is also possible. The choice turned out to depend on an unknown parameter - the distance to the lensing object.

With almost equal probability, the observed object can be either a planet with a satellite located close to us, or a star with a planet located far away.

If the first version is correct, then this planet does not belong to any star system, but wanders through the expanses of the Universe on its own. Such planets have already been found before, and their presence in itself is not very surprising. However, it is not yet clear to scientists whether a planet can leave its star and not lose a satellite along the way.

Be that as it may, confirming the discovery of the first exosatellite will be almost impossible. The likelihood that the mysterious paired object will again fall into the lenses of telescopes is negligible, and astronomers were unable to collect enough data to determine the distance to it - the surge in brightness was too short-lived.

Fox et al. /PNAS 2017

American scientists have found a connection between brain damage and criminal tendencies. To do this, they studied what pathological changes in the brain occur in people convicted of crimes. In an article published in the magazine Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, it is reported that all study participants were found to have disturbances in neural connections involved in decision-making and the ability to assess the mental state of other people.

Some types of brain damage can lead to antisocial behavior. A famous example is the American Phineas Gage, who lived in the mid-19th century. During a railroad construction accident, a metal beam pierced his skull and damaged his brain in the area of the left prefrontal cortex. Gage survived, but his loved ones complained that his character had changed greatly after the injury: he became secretive and rude. Another example is the American killer Charles Whitman, who at the age of 25 killed his wife and mother, and then shot at people from the tower of the University of Texas for an hour and a half. During an autopsy of his body, pathologists discovered a tumor in the area of the right temporal lobe of the brain. Such cases in medical practice allow scientists to suggest that some brain damage may be directly related to antisocial and even criminal behavior.

The authors of the new work, led by Michael D. Fox of Harvard Medical School, studied 17 patients with various types of brain damage and a history of convictions for various acts (both violent crimes and theft and fraud). The researchers analyzed the lesions in the patients' brains, which were located in various parts, including the medial prefrontal cortex, the orbitofrontal cortex, and various parts of the bilateral temporal lobes.

Scientists were unable to find a region of the brain that unites all patients; however, symptoms associated with damage to specific brain regions may also be associated with other functionally and anatomically related regions. Therefore, the researchers studied the functional connectivity between all damaged areas of the patients’ brains and found that all recorded lesions were united by one network responsible for making moral decisions, the theory of mind (English theory of mind; the ability to assess both one’s own mental state and the state of others people), but not responsible for empathy and cognitive control. The scientists also compared the findings with the brain damage of 23 other patients whose behavior was not observed to have criminal tendencies.

(A) brain areas functionally associated with lesions found in patients (higher color temperature indicates greater connectivity) (B) functional connectivity compared to patients without criminal tendencies

Fox et al. / Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 2017

Thus, scientists were able to identify a possible mechanism for brain damage and the subsequent manifestation of criminal tendencies. To draw accurate conclusions about the cause-and-effect relationships of lesions and antisocial tendencies, however, the issue is worth studying further.

Last year, scientists in the somatosensory cortex of rats discovered the neural connections responsible for ticklishness. Also, the neural correlates of memory retrieval have recently been discovered.

Initially, the note said that the areas of the brain responsible for cognitive control were also associated with the emergence of criminal tendencies. However, this is not so: disrupted connections are primarily responsible for decision-making and the ability to assess the mental state of others, but not for cognitive control. Editorial N+1 apologizes.
