New diesel cars. The most economical diesel cars. Advantages of diesel engines

Nowadays, many car enthusiasts prefer diesel engines. Consulting agency J.D. PowerAsiaPacific conducted the study. According to its results, a quarter of all new cars are produced with diesel engines. And that's not all, there is a tendency for this figure to increase.

Back in the 2000s, only one in 10 cars had a diesel engine. And in the future, based on the opinion of experts, this figure will grow annually by 1–2%. There are many reasons for this: the ever-increasing price of fuel and stricter control of environmental standards. Another plus is the possibility of refueling with biodiesel, which is increasingly relevant in light of declining oil reserves.

Pros and cons of a diesel engine

Let's highlight why a diesel engine is better than its gasoline comrades:

  • Economical. Fuel requirement is 30–40% less.
  • Life time. It is durable, on average it will last you twice as long as its gasoline counterpart.
  • Fuel prices. Diesel fuel is much cheaper than gasoline throughout the country.
  • Simplicity. It does not have an ignition system, which eliminates many problems. Reliability is higher.
  • Environmental friendliness. Carbon dioxide emissions are very low.

If you have mentioned the advantages, then you need to talk about the disadvantages.

  • Reliability. Low-quality fuel will quickly destroy the injectors.
  • Maintenance. It will cost you about 20% more.
  • Comfort. The sound of the engine when starting is very unpleasant, and warming up will take longer.
  • Convenience. If you use a manual transmission, you will have to change gears more often.

Most Russians, when they hear the word diesel, remember the smell of diesel fuel on the bus, as well as jeans and watches from the brand of the same name. In Europe, this word is associated with the name of the German inventor. And it is a symbol of a reliable, inexpensive car.

In our country it is not so popular, probably due to the climate. And in last years Almost nothing has been heard about the “million-dollar” engines for which the 90s were so famous. Most likely, this is due to the fact that it has simply become unprofitable for large corporations to produce reliable, long-lived engines.

Rating of the best diesel engines

Having studied the ratings of major car dealerships around the world, we can come to the conclusion that the best diesel engines for passenger cars are no longer smaller copies of truck units, but a full-fledged product. Just look at the durable 1.9 TDI engine from the well-known Volkswagen concern.

At the present time, according to experts, it is considered the most balanced in both power and dynamics.

It comes in various modifications, does not conflict with local fuel, and in good hands runs about 500 thousand kilometers. Of course, a lot depends on proper maintenance and operating conditions, but still this model deserves attention.

Let's not ignore the brand new cars of the Passat series. They are now equipped with BlueMotion engines. The engineers did a great job, they managed to reduce fuel consumption despite the fact that the power did not change and varies from 90 to 120 (hp).

Now he spends only 3.3 liters. per 100 km. They achieved this by updating the turbine and increasing the pressure in the combustion chambers. They also began to pollute the environment much less, which is important in the current conditions.

We also cannot ignore Mercedes and Nissan engines - these are the most reliable engines; Subaru engines will be placed a little lower in our rating. But not only the Japanese and Germans have good diesel engines; for example, the Americans have a good engine from Ford. We'll put Opel on the next level. We’ll stop here, because there are too many complaints about Renault engines, and VAZ engines deserve a separate conversation about them.

What can cause engine failure?

Like everything in our world, the reliability of a diesel engine is a relative concept. It is worth noting that turbine diesel engines are not as reliable as atmospheric ones, because the turbine tends to break down often. There are many factors influencing the work besides assembly. The same internal combustion engine different conditions will behave differently.

As mentioned above, diesel engines are very dependent on the quality of the fuel. Diesel fuel of dubious quality can seriously damage your engine after the first refueling. The point is that outdated Soviet engines can easily handle such fuel, while new ones are guaranteed to fail. Especially if somehow there is some water in the fuel.

This is due to the formation of sulfuric acid, which negatively affects all parts of the car. It occurs as a result of the reaction of sulfur with water, the catalyst of which is high temperature in internal combustion engines.

Although even without the absence of water, excessive sulfur content significantly reduces the service life of the oil. Due to the ingress of crankcase gases into it. Sulfur will also quickly ruin your particulate filter. It should be remembered that if you have doubts about fuel, then to be sure that the car is working, you will have to change the oil twice as often.

Subject to simple rules, even not the most successful motor will serve you faithfully for a long time. You need to use only high quality motor oil, if possible, of the same brand, replace on time, and, of course, do not overheat your unit - do not allow the motor to operate under increased loads.

"Eternal" engines

Let's return to the legendary million-dollar engines already mentioned above. There is an opinion that there used to be engines that could drive up to 1 million kilometers, and this was on those roads, without major repairs. One of these was the Mercedes-Benz M102 model. He came to replace the M115. The M102 has become lighter, but at the same time more powerful.

He achieved this by using thinner walls, which made it possible to lower the crankshaft lower. The cylindrical heads were made in a cross-shape, on which there are suspended V-shaped valves, the drive operates through the central rocker arm of the camshaft.

The engine itself began to be produced in the 80s of the last century in two assemblies. Both configurations were installed in the W123 family of cars.

After 4 years, a new family appeared - W124 and the engine was improved. Hydromounts replaced rubber ones. An oil pressure sensor, a serpentine belt, a crankshaft and lightweight connecting rods were installed on it, and the oil filter was also replaced.

The carburetor version was the last in the history of the brand.

It is also worth mentioning the 2.5 liter diesel engine from Toyota. This engine was considered very good and could run back its million. But of course, with a major overhaul, because the cylinders wear out much faster. The lifespan of the cylinders is approximately 300-400 thousand km.

Let's remember about VAZ engines. Although the build quality of these cars leaves much to be desired, the engines on the frets are very good, I would like to highlight the 8-valve internal combustion engines. For a VAZ-2112, a mileage of 200–300 thousand kilometers is considered quite normal, after which it will have to undergo major repairs.

And VAZ-21083, with the right approach and timely oil changes, can last even longer - up to 400 thousand km. But the 16-valve engine breaks down very quickly. To summarize, the entire VAZ product is a lottery. Marriage is very common.

It’s difficult to say something unambiguously about Renault engines - the line of power units includes good models, but there are frankly weak ones. The most reliable diesel engine is considered to be the 8-valve K7J engine, 1.4 liter, and K7M, 1.6 liter. They are made simply and successfully, and therefore break very rarely.

They have a timing belt (gas distribution mechanism) drive, the valve is adjusted with screws. K7M - used in RenaultSymbol/ Sandero/Logan/ Clio cars. The above-mentioned VAZ uses the Lada Largus in its car. By all accounts, the K7J looks good, except for the power - it is not enough for a mid-size passenger car.

On average, the most economical engine can run up to 400 thousand km without major repairs.

As for the Renault company, its engines are not characterized by high reliability - these are 1.5 liter, 1.9 liter and 2.2 liter diesel engines. Problems often arise with them. Under load, the crankshaft begins to knock, and when the same thing begins to happen with the connecting rod bearings, this is definitely a major overhaul. This diesel engine from Renault will not be able to run much, and major repairs will have to be done after 130–150 thousand kilometers.

The largest and smallest engines

Also wondering, which diesel engine is the best? To date, the Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96 is the most powerful diesel engine. Its size is comparable to a three-story house.

This two-stroke engine weighs 2300 tons. It has two modifications - 6 and 14 cylinders and 108,920 horsepower. This engine is designed for large merchant ships. The latest engine option will burn 6,280 liters of fuel per hour.

And the smallest diesel engine can fit on one finger. In the near future, microscopic engines that will be fueled by hydrocarbon fuel and driven by a tiny generator are on the way in Europe and the United States.

Conclusion

From what is written above, we can see that there are plenty of problems. It is quite possible to understand a motorist who does not want to take risks to save money. But with proper operation, the motor will work for a very long time.

There are cases when such engines lasted 1–1.2 million km even on low-quality fuel.

That is, if you need a car designed to last a long time, then you should think carefully about the diesel option. Also, don’t forget about efficiency. Every 100 kilometers will give you about 30% savings in fuel, which justifies the higher cost of passenger cars.

In our country, this is largely due to the stereotypes of Russian motorists, who, out of old memory, consider diesel engines to be noisy and difficult to maintain. In addition, there is an opinion that diesel fuel cars are not adapted to the cold climate of Mother Russia and may not start in cold weather, because diesel fuel is susceptible to freezing. Automakers, in turn, say that even a short test drive in a modern diesel car can easily destroy these outdated myths. “With the current level of engine technology, diesel engines have virtually no shortcomings. Even in the cold season, there are no difficulties in operating a diesel engine,” says Maxim Vinogradov, commercial director of Volvo Car Russia.

However, the problem for owners of diesel cars remains the poor quality of diesel fuel at Russian gas stations. Indeed, impurities in diesel fuel can damage expensive fuel equipment. In addition, there is a risk of refueling with summer diesel fuel during the demi-season or during a sharp cold snap. However, these concerns largely concern the regions, while in large cities it is not difficult to find gas stations with high-quality diesel fuel today.

According to Ilya Nikonorov, head of the marketing and public relations department at MMS Rus, the situation with the quality of diesel fuel is changing for the better every year, as evidenced by a decrease in the number of warranty claims related to low-quality fuel.

The undeniable advantages of diesel engines over gasoline engines traditionally include greater torque at low speeds, lower fuel consumption, and the ability to travel a greater distance on one tank. However, even despite the fact that the cost of diesel fuel today is on average 7% lower than gasoline, the benefits of purchasing a car running on heavy fuel are not obvious to most Russian motorists. After all, diesel cars themselves are usually more expensive than gasoline versions, and savings from more modest fuel consumption can compensate for the difference in prices when purchasing in best case scenario by the end of the warranty period.

Overpaying or saving?

According to Vladimir Miroshnikov, development director of the Rolf company, modern diesel engines are quite high-tech, and their production, as a rule, turns out to be more expensive than atmospheric gasoline engines of a similar displacement. “From a technical point of view, when designing diesel cars, additional parts and materials are used, which in turn affects the price difference compared to gasoline versions. For example, equipping a car with a special fuel pump and additional components that allow diesel fuel to be distributed in more precise proportions, providing significant fuel savings,” explains Ilya Nikonorov.

By the way, in Europe, where diesel cars are especially popular, automakers initially include part of the benefits from tax benefits. The fact is that in European countries the amount of car tax is tied to the level of harmful emissions, which is traditionally lower for diesel versions. In Russia, the maintenance of such cars is often more expensive, including due to a shorter service interval, as well as more expensive repairs of diesel engines.

As the leading expert of Finam Management Management Company Dmitry Baranov says, in our country there is no developed system of incentives that would encourage consumers to purchase and operate diesel cars, because the issue of the price of the car is decisive for the buyer.

Additionally, in Europe the cost of owning a diesel car is lower than a petrol car due to the more expensive fuel. But in Russia, buying a diesel engine is not economically justified on all models. “In Europe, average mileage is significantly higher than here, automobile tourism is very developed, and for Europeans the benefits of using diesel engines are more obvious. In Russia, with its relatively small average annual mileage, the economic effect of using diesel engines is lost,” says Vladimir Miroshnikov.

For heavy off-road vehicles - heavy fuel

Share of diesel car sales in Russia in 2006–2015 Data from the Autostat agency.

Nevertheless, the share of diesel cars on the Russian market has gradually grown in recent years - from 2% in 2006 to 7.6% in 2014. And last year, according to the Autostat agency, it began to decline, amounting to 7.2%. The fact is that the vast majority of models running on heavy fuel are imported into our country, and in the context of a weak ruble, their cost has become even less attractive compared to gasoline versions. At the same time, low demand for such cars in Russia forces automakers to refuse to sell them.

However, this does not apply to premium brands and the SUV segment, where diesel modifications are traditionally most in demand. The leader in the share of diesel versions in sales volume is Volvo - 82.1% at the end of 2015. Such a high figure is provided, first of all, by the brand’s crossovers - XC60 and. As Maxim Vinogradov says, buyers of such cars want to get from the car not only increased cross-country ability and high level comfort, but also greater traction (for example, during acceleration or in off-road conditions).

In second place in terms of the share of diesel modifications in sales volume is Land Rover with an indicator of 74.5%. The Range Rover Evoque, Discovery and Discovery Sport offer more diesel engines than petrol engines and are also more affordable. As the Jaguar Land Rover press service notes, in addition to the greater torque and efficiency of diesel engines, savings on transport taxes are no less important for buyers. For example, for the Range Rover Sport, the available starting diesel engine is a 3.0-liter 249-horsepower engine, while the most affordable gasoline modification is a version with a 3.0-liter 340-horsepower engine.

Built on the basis of the Hyundai i20, there is a compact “one-volume” vehicle, which is persistently positioned by the manufacturer as a crossover. The car boasts an impressive ground clearance of 164 mm for a passenger car, but this is all that it has in common with off-road models. Soul never had all-wheel drive, nor the “protective body kit” made of unpainted plastic, which is mandatory for all pseudo-SUVs. The only model in our review made with sporting pretensions: a three-door based on the regular Astra. The car began production in 2011, two years after the debut of the regular Astra. There are no engines weaker than 130 horsepower in the Russian range of car modifications, and the 2.0-liter diesel engine is just the basic one in terms of power. But not for the price! The car is of a very rare format in these days: it is something between a crossover and a compact van. The French placed the single-volume body on a chassis with high ground clearance (170 mm). They only forgot about all-wheel drive. But they didn’t forget about the diesel version. True, it’s not cheap, but it also consumes little fuel. Again, the “automatic” is available. The car was developed by the Korean division of GM, it was first shown as a concept in 2008 in Paris, the production version has been produced since 2010. In 2011, the Orlando received a 5-star rating in EuroNCAP crash tests, despite not performing well in child protection tests. The diesel version has been available in Russia since March of this year.

P.S. When the material was being prepared for publication, information came from Opel about its imminent debut in Russia. The car will be equipped with a 2.0 CDTI engine producing 130 hp. With. and automatic transmission. The starting price of this Astra is 947,000 rubles.

Unlike Europe, diesel cars are not very popular in Russia. And sedans even more so. The top ten best-selling cars include only crossovers and pickups. However, diesel sedans are still sold in our country. Let's get to know some of them.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

First - about the cars of the major league. Among the eight long-wheelbase (there are no short cars in the price lists yet) modifications of the Mercedes S-Class with a W222 body (including a hybrid), only one is equipped with a diesel engine - the S350d. Moreover, in the range of the model this version is the weakest - six cylinders and only 249 hp. with a working volume of three liters.

For comparison, similar cars with gasoline engines develop from 333 to a crazy 630 hp. True, the diesel engine comes with the proprietary Mercedes 4Matic all-wheel drive system at no additional cost.

Volvo S90

Many people are trying to compete with prestigious cars from Germany. Including the Swedes from Volvo. The “top” model S90 is exactly the rival of the Audi A6. It's stylish and looks really Swedish - like a block of ice, beautifully cut. Headlights with daytime running lights on create a certain prim effect, but this is a matter of taste.

Unlike Audi, the interior of the S90 has a zest; it is not boring and pleases with fresh notes. For example, a three-spoke steering wheel with a hub “shield”. Or deflectors of the ventilation system, made in an antique style. In general, designers don't get paid for nothing.

At the same time, the car is “stuffed” with electronics in the latest fashion. The instrument cluster is not an ordinary one, but a virtual one, and the place of the “music” and climate control units is taken by a huge touch display - approximately like on a Tesla. Although, just below there is still a number of real keys for controlling the most popular functions, such as the hazard warning lights and heated rear window. The automatic mode selector is a familiar lever, although now it is increasingly being replaced by buttons, a knob or a steering column switch.

In addition to two gasoline engines, there is also one diesel engine in the arsenal! It is also, like the Audi, two-liter, with a capacity of 235 hp, and a manual transmission is also not available. - 3.1 million rubles, but if desired and possible, it can easily be almost doubled.

Citroen C4 Sedan

But what if you pay attention to cars that are much closer to the people? Say, a Russian-assembled sedan on a Citoen C4? It has been produced for several years now, but relatively recently it underwent restyling. Daytime running lights appeared in the headlights, and the rear lights became fully LED. And in general, the car looked quite nice.

True, French design is liked by some and not by others, but it leaves few indifferent. The turbodiesel is offered, however, not only in the Live configuration. This is a well-known 1.6-liter engine of the HDi family. Its power is quite sufficient for many - 116 hp.

For this sedan, diesel is only available with a six-speed manual transmission. The base price of such a car is just over one million rubles, and the list of equipment is modest (for example, there are only two airbags, which is very little in these days).

But to the credit of the manufacturer, they did not skimp on active safety - the stabilization system is already installed “as standard”. Don’t want to move the lever or want to shell out for options? You'll have to buy a car with gasoline.

Cars with diesel engines are inferior in popularity to their gasoline counterparts. But in recent years in Russia there has been an increase in sales of cars that can run on diesel fuel. And this happens despite the fact that the cost of the same model will not be in favor of a diesel car. What makes these cars so popular?

  • First of all, car enthusiasts prefer diesel engines when they have to drive a lot. Diesel fuel consumption is lower, which makes long runs more economical. Therefore, people who travel a lot, use the car for work, transport cargo, etc. choose cars with diesel engines.
  • Diesel engines stand out due to their torque. They may be less revving, but they have more traction force than their gasoline counterparts. This quality is especially in demand in real SUVs, commercial vehicles, trucks, and special equipment.
  • The build quality of diesel engines has improved significantly in recent years. As a result, they have become more reliable and durable than gasoline units. Some models can travel more than 1 million km without major repairs.
  • Such a disadvantage of diesel engines as low speed has also been resolved. Thanks to the installation of turbochargers, it was possible not only to increase engine power, but also to make the car more dynamic. Some cars accelerate just as well as gasoline cars.
  • Experts in the used car market note another point in favor of vehicles with diesel engines. Such cars become cheaper more slowly, which is explained more for a long time services.
  • An important factor when choosing a diesel car is safety. Diesel fuel is much more difficult to ignite than gasoline. Therefore, due to overheating in the engine compartment, diesel fuel will definitely not ignite. In addition, there are no high-voltage wires in the diesel unit that can spark strongly.

Our review includes the best diesel cars on the Russian market. The rating was compiled taking into account reviews of domestic motorists.

Best Budget Diesel Cars

Although the concept of budget in relation to diesel cars is not always appropriate (they are all more expensive than their gasoline counterparts), there are several affordable models on the car market. Here you can choose a car for travel and for work.

5 FORD MONDEO

Powerful engine
A country: USA (made in Russia)
Average price: 650,000 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.5

For lovers of speed and power, this is an ideal option, even despite the presence of a diesel engine, which, as a rule, does not differ in dynamic characteristics. A two-liter engine with a capacity of 140 horsepower is installed here, which allows the rather large and heavy car to accelerate very quickly and maintain speed even on steep climbs.

Also, do not forget that this is a Ford, and cars of this brand are distinguished by excellent handling and high safety indicators. According to some authoritative publications, this is one of the safest cars. It is equipped with 8 airbags and a huge number of protective systems such as ABS and ERA. The above price is not for a new car, but for one produced in 2013, but in better quality and without complaints about the engine and condition in general. Of course, you can always save up and buy a new version, but unfortunately, there are no new products in this Ford line yet, and the company does not make announcements, although as practice shows, such cars last a very long time, and 2013 is still considered a completely fresh model.

4 SKODA RAPID

The most attractive price
Country: Czech Republic
Average price: 457,000 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.6

Another car produced specifically for Russia. The Czech brand, which has been working closely with local concerns for a long time, pleases us with inexpensive and high-quality cars with a maximum range of options. In this case, it is worth noting that the price is indicated as the average value for a car produced in 2014. Unfortunately, Skoda has not yet announced new models. But everything you need is here. What is called “full stuffing”.

Firstly, there is a 105 horsepower 1.6 liter diesel engine on board. This allows the car to maintain excellent mobility characteristics without loss of speed and power. Secondly, there are all the options included in the maximum package. Even parking sensors and fog lights are installed, along with heated seats, which, as a rule, is not included in the basic and initial equipment. There is no need to talk about efficiency at all. With such technical indicators, and considering that the car is diesel, it is easy to guess that it is very economical, and consumes less than 5 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers traveled.

3 CITROEN C4

Wide range of options
Country: France
Average price: 1220000 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

The French Citroen is rightfully considered one of the most popular cars produced specifically for Russia, taking into account all the requirements of local car owners. The price indicated in this description is an average value, and if desired, this car can be purchased cheaper, even with a diesel engine. The basic version will not have additional options, but the cost will decrease by almost 200 thousand.

The second modification includes everything you need, including electric mirror adjusters and a maximum range of security systems. The only things not included are fog lights and heated seats. You will have to pay extra for them separately. As for the technical characteristics, here, first of all, the installed diesel engine stands out for its efficiency. Its fuel consumption is only 4.8 liters per hundred kilometers, which is quite pleasant for such a not-so-small car. In addition, the engine has a power of 114 horsepower, which will significantly save taxes for the owner, without affecting speed performance in any way.

2 Peugeot 408

Best budget sedan
Country: France
Average price: 937,000 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

The best budget sedan with a diesel engine is the Peugeot 408 passenger car. In the Active Diesel configuration, it is equipped with a 114 hp diesel engine. With. (1.6 l). In the combined cycle, the engine consumes only 4.9 liters of diesel fuel. The family sedan has a stylish design and a high degree of safety. Paired with a diesel engine is a manual transmission, which allows the car to accelerate to 188 km/h. The base includes airbags for both the driver and front passenger, as well as electronic system distribution of braking force. 1. Before the onset of cold weather, while gas stations do not have winter diesel fuel, antigel should be added to the fuel. This is a special additive that prevents the formation of paraffin crystals. This method can reduce the thickening threshold by 10-15 degrees.
  2. During severe frosts, many professional drivers add kerosene (in extreme cases gasoline) to diesel fuel in a ratio of 3:1. The fuel becomes less viscous, it throughput increases.

The most compact crossover
Country: Korea
Average price: 1200000 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

We have before us a transitional model, whose involvement in a certain type is still debated by experts and owners. On the one hand, this is a passenger car, as it has a 1.6-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 120 horsepower. This is the norm for a passenger car, but the manufacturer itself positions the model as a crossover, which is clearly evidenced by the dimensions and ground clearance, the size of which is 160 millimeters. This is not enough for a crossover, but a lot for a passenger car. It turns out that this is a hybrid, and therefore we should not place high hopes on it.

In fact, if you do not plan to overcome severe off-road conditions with this car, or climb a steep mountain, there will be no problems. And the interior is very roomy and can easily accommodate five adults. The trunk is spacious, and there are a lot of other options that increase the level of comfort. 1 Honda CR-V 3

Best build quality to price ratio
Country: Japan
Average price: 1,500,000 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.9

Japanese automakers are distinguished by the high quality of their products, and Honda is one of the leaders in both the domestic and global markets. Before us is a crossover that has been produced since 2006, but has not yet lost its popularity. The main advantage here is the reliability of the engine, a diesel engine installed in two variations. There is a two-liter engine and a more powerful 2.4-liter equivalent. The engines are very powerful and, as experts note, practically immortal, which cannot be said about the gearbox. No, it is not bad, but after 200 thousand mileage, failures of some components are often observed. This is if we are talking about an automatic transmission, but there are models with a manual transmission, and there are no such problems.

Well, like all Japanese cars, the main problem is the purchase of original spare parts. There are many of them on the market, but they are very expensive. Fortunately, finding decent analogues is not difficult, but it is important to buy a good replica and not a low-quality fake. In any case, this crossover is suitable for those who value reliability and are not ready to repair their car twice a year, constantly changing parts.

The best frame SUVs with a diesel engine

A real frame SUV is equipped with a simple diesel engine. It may not have sky-high power, but its high torque helps it overcome the most difficult off-road conditions.

5 Great Wall Hover

Maximum set of options
Country: China
Average price: 900,000 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.6

Before us is the best combination of crossover design and the cross-country ability of a real SUV. Chinese engineers have once again achieved the impossible. The car looks very attractive, and many often classify it as a luxury car. But looking at the characteristics, you understand that this is a real SUV, capable of coping with the most difficult obstacles.

Let's start with the engine. Here it is a 2.4-liter diesel unit with a capacity of 170 horses. With such indicators, you need all-wheel drive, and here it is, but not permanent, as is often the case with Chinese manufacturers, but plug-in. A low gear unit is installed on board, which also indicates the cross-country characteristics of the car. Well, and of course, the ground clearance is almost 20 centimeters. A very impressive result, especially for a crossover, and it is in this category that the manufacturer classifies this model, although experts continue to consider it a frame SUV.

4 SsangYong Actyon

Permanent all-wheel drive
Country: Korea
Average price: 1,050,000 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

Looking for the best crossover at the best price? Then be sure to pay attention to this model from the famous Korean brand. There are several modifications of this car, but we will talk about the most powerful model, which has a 2.4-liter diesel engine on board and produces 170 horsepower. A very high result, worthy even of a mid-size SUV, but this is a crossover, which means it is capable of not only developing a decent speed, but also coping well with off-road conditions and other difficulties.

Models of the younger category, equipped with weaker 140-horsepower engines, have exclusively rear-wheel drive, but here we see permanent, all-wheel drive, without the ability to turn it off. On the one hand, this is a disadvantage, since the already considerable fuel consumption increases significantly. On the other hand, you will not have problems moving both around the city and on dirt roads.

3 Nissan X-Trail

The most reliable SUV
Country: Japan
Average price: 1250000 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

This model is classified as an SUV, but in fairness it should be noted that it is more of a mid-size crossover, and it cannot boast of off-road characteristics. A 2.5-liter diesel engine is installed on board this model, producing power of over 150 horsepower. For a crossover this is already too much, but for an SUV it is clearly not enough. But you will be pleased with the ground clearance, which here is 180 millimeters.

But the main advantage of this model, like all Japanese-made products, is reliability and durability. As experts note, the car is practically indestructible and can operate for many years without repairs, provided that you do not forget to replace consumables. But if something goes wrong, get ready for significant costs. Parts for this car are very expensive, at least the original ones. Here you really should understand that there are many high-quality analogues on the market, and if you know how to choose them, there will be no problems with repairs or replacement of parts.

2 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

Better cross-country ability
Country: Japan
Average price: 2199000 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.9

Mitsubishi Pajero SUVs have a glorious history; the cars were repeated winners of the famous Dakar rally. The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport model with a 2.4 DI-D Invite diesel engine continues the glorious traditions of its predecessors. Maximum reliability for the jeep is ensured by a 6-speed manual transmission. The SUV has good acceleration dynamics (11.4 s to 100 km/h), but the main parameter of the engine is the power of 181 hp. With. The engine is not too gluttonous; in mixed mode its appetite is limited to 7.4 liters per 100 km. A classic component of a real frame SUV is a two-speed transfer case with the ability to forcefully lock the rear differential.

The indisputable advantages of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport SUV include excellent cross-country ability, spaciousness, comfort, and economical consumption. The disadvantages of the jeep are rigidity, engine noise, and weak paintwork.

1 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

Popular frame SUV
Country: Japan
Average price: 2948000 rub.
Rating (2019): 5.0
